EFFECT OF SPRAY APPLICATION PARAMETERS
AND ADJUVANTS ON BROAD-LEAVED WEED CONTROL
IN MAIZE
SUMMARY
In field experiments carried out in 2005 2006 the influence of spray volume, different nozzle
types and adjuvants on efficiency of two herbicides Titus 25 WG and Milagro 040 SC against
broad-leaved weeds in maize crop was studied. Herbicides were applied with or without adjuvant
organosilicone Break Thru S 240 (0.1%) or mineral oil Atpolan 80 EC (0.5%) against fat hen
(Chenopodium album) and redshank (Polygonum persicaria). Two spray volume of 125 l/ha and

250 l/ha were used for application of herbicides with flat fan nozzle (XR 11002  fine droplet
size) or air injection nozzle (DB 11002  course droplets) at 0.3 MPa. In 2005 biological efficacy
of Titus 25 WG with or without adjuvants was similar and independent on spray volume and
nozzle type. In this year adjuvants and spray parameters had essential effect on Milagro 040 SC
efficacy, especially against fat hen.
Generally, adjuvants improved efficiency of applied herbicides but spray application parame-
ters i.e. spray volume and droplet size (nozzle type) gave no constant effect. Two spray volumes
did not effect the efficacy of herbicides in controling of broad-leaved weeds. The above findings
suggested a possibility of decrease the volume of water used with herbicides to 125 l/ha, without a
negative effect on biological activity.
Addition of adjuvants and proper choice of spray application parameters i.e. coarse spray
quality could be considered as effective tools in weed control under specific weather conditions
(drought, higher temperature, low humidity, higher wind speed).
