All right then, Merona said. I ll see you at work, I m gonna just catch a few more
minutes of shut eye.
Lina rolled her eyes. Her grandmother didn t need to sleep, but Merona held fast to
certain human customs, sleep being one of those. Lina just wished she understood why her
grandmother always insisted on snoring.
Fine, she ground out. But, Granna, you have to swear to me, no funny business today.
This is a really important day. If I fail to make a good impression, then I ll likely get fired, and
with no source of income, we ll be moving on again.
Honestly, Lina. Merona laid a hand against her heart. As if you even needed to ask.
Yeah, right. She shook her head and shuffled toward the bathroom, wondering what
would be appropriate attire for waitressing.

Trent ambled up the sidewalk toward the sheriff s office. It was still cool out, just barely
in the seventies, and the sun was just beginning its rise over the mountains. A nice day for a
walk.
Thinking back to last night and the way he d yanked Jess from Lina s apartment, he
groaned. He was such a fool. So she liked to make her own soap and grind her own herbs,
nothing wrong with that. He was allowing the memories of his past to influence his idea of who
Lina was. That wasn t fair to her. He scrubbed a hand down his face. He needed to make up with
Lina and apologize. Why was it that he seemed to be doing a lot of that lately?
Trent knew she d been upset. She d practically stomped a hole through his roof, and
rightly so, he figured. What was it about this slip of a woman that drove him to distraction?
A shadow caught his eye and he glanced up to see said woman running across the street
toward the diner. She wore a tan overcoat, white sneakers, and nothing else. Her blond hair
swayed gently behind her back.
A wicked smile turned up the corners of his mouth. The look reminded him of a flasher.
He sure wouldn t mind being flashed by her, wouldn t even write her a ticket for it.
His heart stuttered in his chest at the thought. Blood rushed to his groin, his body tingled.
Trent blew out a deep breath. He really needed to stop thinking about those things. It was
dangerous to a man s sanity. He cleared his throat and crossed the street, glancing down at his
wristwatch. You re ten minutes early.
Oh! Lina startled and turned. Her eyes widened, then narrowed. They were the shade of
a winter storm cloud this morning, tinged with flecks of violet. Oh, you. Streaks of sunshine
touched her pale blond hair, creating a halo-like effect around her head. She was stunning.
Especially when she was all riled with him.
What are you doing here? she asked, then turned her head to the side.
She was mad. Damn, he hated this. Listen, Lina, about last night.
Lina turned slowly, her face devoid of all emotion as she waited, arms crossed over her
chest.
She drove him crazy, getting under his skin in a way he didn t want to study or even
understand. All he knew was he liked it. Her spunk, her fire, her.
Trent scrubbed a hand down his face and smiled. I had no right to make you feel that
way, Lina. I m sorry.
She sighed and gave him the sweet, crooked smile that set a fire ablaze in his gut.
WITCH HUNT Leanne Karella & Vivienne King 35
I want to ask you something, she said.
Trent guessed he d been granted her forgiveness, and nodded.
Her hands fumbled with the belt of her coat and she opened her jacket, revealing her
outfit underneath. Do you think this is suitable waitress attire?
Holy hell!
Trent swallowed the vile, sexually charged curse clawing up his throat. Her long, lean,
sun-kissed legs peeked out from beneath a short denim skirt. A white tank top completed the
ensemble. Her ever present bracelets jangled and she lifted a raised brow.
 Well? She asked.
* * * *
No. Hell no! You march your pretty little butt back up to your apartment and change
into something respectable. There s no way on God s green earth you re going to flash that much
skin in this town.
Lina didn t know if she should be irate at his reaction or not. His face had gone an odd
shade of red-purple that she wouldn t have guessed was humanly possible, and his eyes flashed
the color of blue fire. She bit the inside of her cheek as she listened to him bluster on and on
about skin and legs and cowboys. She didn t understand half of what he ranted about. What she
did hear was the pretty little butt remark. And since he couldn t seem to take his gaze off her
legs, except to move to her breasts, she couldn t help but enjoy his reaction.
He finally stopped talking, fisted his hands on his hips, and glared at her. Damn, he
looked good in his uniform. Black western boots, dark brown slacks and shirt that hugged every
lovely muscle of his body. The gun belt really did something for him, and she could think of a
few interesting things to use those handcuffs for. And the gold star over his heart.
She caught herself mid-sigh and straightened. But she couldn t help the smile that tilted
her lips, no matter how hard she tried to hide it.
You think this is funny? You wear that in there, he pointed at the front of the diner,
and it ll be the Alamo all over again.
I thought the Alamo was in Texas, not Arizona. Oh, look, she thought, as she stifled a [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
